High Tech Shopping Carts

2007-10-01-tvkart.jpgWould your child be happier watching Barney while you foodshop? Well, these TV Karts have been tested the last year or so, are already in use in New Zealand, and came up on our local news the other night.

The idea is that you can shop with less distraction while your child is entertained by the LCD screen playing Barney, Bob the Builder, or The Wiggles. But is this the answer to those long trips to the store?

Of course they won't get the luxury ride for free. It'll cost you $1 to rent one for the duration of your trip down the aisles. What do you think? A good idea, or another thing they'll have to have?

I've got two rambunctious little ones--trips to the grocery store with either or both of them are not always easy. But grocery shopping has so many upsides with kids--hard as it is it seems a shame to lose that.

Plus one of mine really doesn't care for tv--Barney wouldn't cut it for him.

I think it's a fine idea--ONLY if they make one for me too! There are times when the Mr. and I are shopping that one of us would love to be pushed around with a little television at our disposal.

While we avoid taking our little one to the grocery store for a long trip (usually he stays home with one of us), sometimes it can't be helped. If this made it more bearable for him, I say why not? I absolutely abhor grocery shopping so I can sympathize with the child who does too!

There is so much concern with occuping kids every second of the day. When are they going to learn patience and how to entertain themselves if we cant even bear to let them sit in a grocery cart without being hypnotized by a tv screen?

This would be great for emergencies (you know, when the kid is due for a nap but you've stuffed up the timing of your day and now you have to do the grocery while he's being totally mental), but there's also a lot of fun to be had by having kids "help" with the shopping. And I think if my kid knew about this trolley, he'd want it every single time.

Our local Meijer store (MI,OH,KY,IN) like a walmart but better. Has had these for several months. I used one once when a lady was finished with it. She let us use it without having to pay the $1 rental. My niece always wants one but we tell her no. I don't like the fact that you have to pay a $1 and the fact that the child is in a little cocoon watching tv and not interacting with the world.

I have my niece help with shopping or occupy her with singing and stories while shopping.

There are all kinds of things to learn and do at the grocery store. Children really don't need to watch TV every hour of every day.

Totally agree Sleepy Dweller! Exposing kids to the more mundane aspects of life - food shopping, doctors appointments, long car rides - allows them to develop the skills they need to be content in these situations. No-one is going to wheel out a little TV to get them through a maths class (I hope they aren't anyway...). And besides, how will kids learn how to do all of these everyday essential tasks if they are absorbed in Barney and not watching us?

Bear in my mind, I don't have children but plan to but dang, this seems really awful. I don't understand how kids are ever going to learn how to be a functioning member of society if they are always watching tv.

I agree that this would be great for emergencies when the kid is having a full blown meltdown and you just need to get the shopping done. My son is on the whole a perfectly lovely little two year old and although I ensure that he's well fed and rested before we go grocery shopping, once in awhile he decides he's bored in the cart and just wants to run around the ailses which isn't feasible, so full blown meltdown ensues. The wonders of the grocery aisles are lost on him. I talk to him throughout to keep him happy and as entertained as possible but if this cart existed where we live I would absolutely use it once in awhile. Just because you may let your kid watch tv in a grocery cart doesn't mean they watch tv all day long.

Ugh, how awful. I'm happy that we shop at crunchy stores filled with employee-owners that would shave off their own dreadlocks before offering this. My kid doesn't watch tv at home; I'll be damned if he's going to pick up the habit while we're shopping.
