Mate in Peru
Adventures and Outings 2009

Names/Ages: Mate (1.5 in photo, now 4)
Vacation Location: Lima, Peru

Favorite Baby or Child Friendly Activity There: Soaking in the colorful sights, sounds and smells of the open-aired market every morning. My son loved seeing all the vendors selling colorful candied apples, wind-up toys and trinkets, and fresh meats, fruits, and veggies.

Best Tip for Traveling with Kids: Slow down and appreciate the simple experiences you are sharing together as a family. Bring plenty of books, snacks and distractions for long plane rides and plenty of comfort items to soothe a cranky or sleepy child. DVDs also helped for times we were stuck waiting in an airport or hotel or times when my son woke up early and we had to keep him occupied before we could wake up the rest of the house.

Favorite Way to Make it Feel Like Home: I brought my son's blanket and bear from home and lots of familiar snacks, since I knew all the food would be different and new. Pulling out a familiar and favorite snack from home after a long day would help calm him. Music and movies from home also helped him unwind and relax at night.

An Item you MUST Take With You While Traveling: My backpack filled with drinks, snacks, comfort items, distractions and my camera!

Thanks, Patricia!
