Reader Tip: Swimming Accessories

2007-06-19-missy2

Water babies. AT: Nursery Reader Missy shares two great finds with us. Hot weather sends most of us to the pool - a hit for most youngsters.

For her 3 year old, Missy says: I picked up this neat float backpack, similar to the one she uses in her swim class. Gives her complete independence in the pool. She loves it. Layers of floats can be removed as the child's swimming skills improve. Go here to find something similar.

Check out how Missy keeps her 10 month old happy and safe in the water with the baby floater complete with sun canopy. (We love the elephant print bathing suit!)

If you've got an idea, photo or tip you'd like to share with the AT: Nursery community, email us at nursery(dot)apartmenttherapy(dot)com.

Thanks, Missy!

Sorry, I'm not usually a judger on at but the floating backpack (and all floaties) are dangerous. They give a false sense of safety. No 3 year old should have "complete independence" the pool if she can't swim.

Floaty devices for little kids are frightening if for one second the parent feels assured their beloved children are protected. I love the shade for the infant to protect from direct sunlight but worry because those babies can drown in 1 inch of water much less a pool.

When you look at safety approved flotation devices you will note the buoyant supports are located behind the head and over the abdomen forcing the occupant to float face up. These are the life jackets used in boating that can save a life when the need arises.

I have to agree that the backpack floatie seems like a less-than-great idea... if something happens don't you want the kid to be face-up or head-up? the floats on the back would make it difficult to get face-up wouldn't they?
