Summer Camps for the Whole Family
Budget Travel

I recently returned from what felt like a cross between a family reunion (but there were *only* 13 of us, so not a true reunion) and a summer getaway camp. Staying at a wilderness lodge in southern Missouri, my siblings, parents, spouses and kids spent 5 full days hiking, swimming, boating, water skiing, fishing, playing shuffle board and putting together puzzles. Felt very summer camp to us. Instead of sending kids off to camp on their own, we're wondering how many of you entertain the idea of a summer camp for the family?

You can of course create your own experience, or, there are tons of great looking sites and activities out there nationwide specializing in canoeing, sailing, farming, sports, performing arts...you name it! From Budget Travel's May '09 issue, here are a few featured:

Above, left to right:
SAN DIEGO, CA: Paskowitz Surf Camp
MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE: Appalachian Mountain Club Family Adventure Camps
CANOE ISLAND, WA: Canoe Island French Camp
HOWLANDS LANDING, CA: Jean-Michel Cousteau Family Camp
WILLITS, CA: Emandal—A Farm on a River.

My family is going to family camp in VT in Aug. My husband & I were campers throughout our childhoods & we are excited to go back to camp and share it with our 4-yr-old. The camp where we are going has a nice mix of supervised activities, like hikes, and also free time to spend boating or doing arts & crafts. We're looking forward to it!
