Erin's diaper bag question yesterday made us realize we'd gone 9 months since our son was born without using a diaper bag. We'd always intended to get one, but never got around to it and since we live in Brooklyn and take our stroller everywhere, we throw everything we need in the basket below. This morning our husband sent us a link to the Diaper Dude Messenger II bag as "something cool we might want to blog about," but now we're starting to think maybe he was sending us a hint. Father's Day isn't too far off...
We actually did purchase him JJ Cole's very affordable Logic Bag thinking he'd like it for its small size and discreet design, but it's hanging in the closet with the tags still on. When our son starts to walk we'll probably leave the stroller behind on quick trips around the neighborhood or on trips to the nearby park, so maybe he should start thinking about how he's going to carry around even minimal baby gear.
While it looks like most messenger bags, there are a few features specifically designed with babies in mind including an insulated bottle holder, clips for a stroller strap and a compartment sized for portable baby wipes. We do wish that the front flap were somehow long enough to use as a mini changing pad. The photo above is the black polyester version which is also available in grey or camo ($98). They also make an olive "green" version made from recycled fabric and as well as a brown pleather one.
Do any Ohdeedoh dudes own this bag? Do you like it?
I'm not a dude, but this is pretty cool. What has worked for my husband (and myself) is one of those nylon drawstring knapsacks. His was schwag from some conference he went to, but you can pick them up at places like Target.

For xmas my sister got her husband the diaper dude in camo, he also got many many other things in camo. They were expecting at the time and he was sooo excited to have 'manly' baby stuff. He took them to work and showed them off (haha!)

ive been looking for a diaper bag myself ever since you guys posted about the sstein baby case. something plain enough to wear with everything but functional as a baby bag and a purse/carryall. so far that bags a winner, aside from the 400 dollar price tag and their return policy. if i happen to spend my money on a bag ive never seen in person and decide im not so hot on it, i can only return it for store credit. lame.

My wife bought me a Diaper Dude for Christmas after we found out we were expecting. She went and bought two large, "girly" bags from Target to use as diaper bags, thinking she'd never want to carry mine. The DD was so handy, though, she actually wound up using it as her primary diaper bag. She still has the other two and uses them when she and our daughter go to "Mommy" events, but on a Saturday afternoon running errands, that DD is usually right by our side.

I dunno -- I kind like turning this into a daddy diaper bag -- it's something that he can use afterwards (just make sure to use those little diaper bag bags for no leaks and you are set).

Bags like this for example, will help keep it organized, as well insulated pouches for sippy cups, and wet bags for cloth diapers and cloths:

You know, for all this fuss about diaper bags, kids grow out of them pretty quick, and then you are stuck with them. So either get something super, super practical on many different levels -- IMO the hoppop, which I keep posting about (the brown or black ones are perfect for dad use too -- watch the video on the site to see how useful it is -- click on the "original", the icon in front of the bike -- http://www.hoppop.eu/ ) -- or get something that will work well as a regular bag afterwards.
The Storksak, which Brad Pitt uses, isn't bad either.

I have to admit, maybe because my husband is an amazing dad and an amazing man, or maybe because I made sure to get a unisex diaper bag, but over the course of the past 5 years with our 2 children, he has done about 90% of the diaper changing on the road. (yep, he deserves a medal!). Something to ponder, anyway...

I love that Storksak but hate the $210 price tag . . .
We bought a Skip Hop because it looked the most unisex but my husband also uses a Freitag bag when he goes solo with the baby. No pockets but it's big and roomy and fits a lot.

Funny, mine just arrived today! It's not quite as big as I'd hoped, and I could do without the silly checklist under the flap. But otherwise, it's just about the perfect balance between practicality and attractiveness. It's not the most stylish thing around, but the orange on grey stitching (not in the one pictured above) kicks it up a notch, and it's got a ton of pockets without looking like a fabric toolchest. Both my wife and I like it and the stroller hoops should work w/ our stroller. Oh, and although it doesn't say so anywhere that I saw, it comes w/ a changing pad.
In short, I wish my laptop bag was this great.
