apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Dreaming of the World

2007-05-21-map1.jpg

Why not give them the world? Remember when Tom Hanks whips out that big wall map in his kitchen to show Jonah how far away Seattle is from Annie in Baltimore in "Sleepless in Seattle?" We always thought that was so cool. We've been seeing more modern globes out in the design world too. Well, why not take the idea a step further and give your child a whole wall or walls of maps?

This picture from Kerry Joyce design was featured on Terramia . We love how this design is soft and sophisticated at the same time.

We googled around just to see what other maps are out there. The Executive World Map is 13' x 9' feet and it's laminated so kids can actually write on it with a dry erase marker. They'll definitely be ahead of the game when it comes to Geography class.

Has anyone else used maps in a creative way in their home or child's room? Let us know!

Thanks to Paula for the tip!

By accident, I came across the feature in Elle Decor on Julianne Moore's former apartment in NYC. The map she hung in her son Caleb's room was this one:

Rather than being stuck with whatever SkyMall has... you could use a high-res scan of an antique map (or photograph of one) and then The Rasterbator. May not be the cheapest in the end, but would still be pretty cool.

Growing up, I had a National Geographic map hanging over my bed. Fun and quite educational, especially when the magazine had to issue new maps to keep up with the new countries being created (breakup of USSR, Yugoslavia, Ethiopia, etc)

Urban Outfitters online also sells a world map as wallpaper. I'm considering getting it for my boy's room! http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=23055&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=336&iSubCat=303&iProductID=23055
