WPA Reading Posters

2007_09_12_Historic-Reading-Poster.jpg

Sign your kids up for the Be Kind to Books Club. Okay, this doesn't exist anymore, but we can get behind the sentiment. This poster, and others like it, was created under the aegis of the WPA's Federal Art Project in the late 1930s to promote libraries and literacy. Reprints of many of the posters are now available for sale.

The distinctive, graphic style of WPA posters translates well into children's art and, to our eye, still looks fresh today.

Eight WPA literacy posters are available through AllPosters.com for $10 each. Type "historic reading poster" in the search box to find them.

And, hey, your family can still pioneer your own Be Kind to Books Club.

Thanks so much for this! I just ordered the "January: A Year of Good Reading Ahead" poster for my son's room.
